Willow coffins are being chosen more and more for a funeral

Recently, more and more people have become interested in eco-friendly funeral options rather than traditional ones. One example of this is the popularity of wicker coffins, also referred to as willow caskets. Not only are these coffins sustainable due to their biodegradable materials, but they also provide a natural and aesthetically pleasing appearance that continues to grow in popularity.

If you opt for a wicker coffin, you will find that it offers far more than just an environmentally-friendly method for burial. The organic look and feel of the coffin can create a serene atmosphere that is highly appropriate for a dignified funeral service. The lightweight nature of the coffin makes it easy to transport, handle and lower into a grave, adding to its practicality as well. Additionally, wicker coffins can be custom-made and come in various sizes, shapes, and colors, so you can choose one that aligns with your preferences, needs, and budget.

From a sentimental perspective, choosing a wicker coffin is a unique and meaningful tribute to your loved one. By selecting a biodegradable willow coffin, you are contributing to a more sustainable future while honoring the memory of the deceased.

Willow trees are known for their quick growth rate, making them a renewable and sustainable resource for various applications. The willow tree's flexibility and strength make it a popular option for creating woven baskets, furniture, and fences. Additionally, the willow tree's branches are used to make cricket bats and other sporting equipment.

Furthermore, willow trees offer several ecological benefits. For example, their extensive root system helps prevent erosion, and their leaves provide shade and habitat for insects and birds. Willow trees are also commonly used in wetland restoration projects because of their ability to absorb excess nutrients from the environment.

Overall, the sustainability of willow trees is high due to their natural rate of growth, versatility in multiple applications, and positive impact on the environment.

A beautiful hand made willow coffin, decorated with flowers- hand crafted at Cradle to Grave Willow Coffins

A willow coffin is traditionally weaved by hand using long, pliable branches of the willow tree. The rods are first soaked in water to make them easier to work with and more flexible.

The weaver will start by constructing a base using a thicker willow branch as the frame. Then, thinner branches are woven around the frame and tied together at regular intervals to form the sides of the coffin.

As the weaving continues, the weaver will gradually decrease the size of the branches used, creating a more intricate pattern and a seamless finish. Finally, a lid is crafted and attached to the rest of the coffin with hinges or ties made from the same pliable branches.

The process of weaving a willow coffin can just two days, but requires precision and skill to create a strong, durable and beautiful final product.

Our willow coffin makers are inspired by the traditions and workmanship of years gone by. We make two different shaped coffins to keep things simple and can use a variety of natural colours of willow- buff, brown, green, steamed and white. The caskets we craft and provide can not only be used for a traditional funeral or cremation, but also as part of an environmentally-friendly woodland or natural burial and green burial – please do let us know your wishes and we will make sure we design and create the perfect coffin for your upcoming service. Our coffins come with a bio degradable waterproof liner and are lined with a natural calico cotton liner.
